There occasionally comes a time in our lives when we realize that what
worked for us in the past no longer works. We see the futility of continuing
down the path we are on because it’s no longer leading
us in the direction we want to go. Reaching that realization
can be frustrating and a little scary when we don’t clearly
see our true path. Our friend Sam recently reached just such
an impasse. Not knowing where to turn, he called on us
for assistance.
Even Successful People Get Stuck
Sam is a successful guy.
He has great friends, a beautiful home and a delightful wife. Cars
and selling a great product are among his many passions. He’s
been in some aspect of sales in the auto industry for years.
Just before
Christmas he reached a low point and felt really discouraged. He’d
been job-seeking without success for quite some time and
couldn’t seem to pinpoint the problem. He asked
for our help to get himself back on track.
Knowing What You
Love Changes Everything
It's amazing what happens when
someone gets in touch with what they really, really, really love.
Just one question allowed Sam to clearly see that for himself.
As he shared about his love of selling, we asked him to identify
specifically what he loves about it.
Sam hesitated for a moment and then his demeanor completely changed. His
body relaxed and his face and eyes lit up like a Christmas tree as he
began to speak about the aspects of selling that call to him.
Sam LOVES closing the deal! He
loves the moment he walks out after completing a successful
win-win deal. He LOVES getting in his car, cranking up the
music and driving home feeling excited about the great sale
he just made. He LOVES helping someone get what they want.
We haven't seen Sam look so happy and young and relaxed in
a really long time. We swear he could sell ice cubes
to Eskimos with his great energy! Sam’s
Situation Quickly Turned Around
We encouraged Sam to take that
powerful and joyful energy into his next interview. Guess
what? He did and he got the job he wanted!!!!!
Sam had been
concerned that no one would hire him in a different field
because he’d
been in the automotive industry for so long. We believe his
excitement and enthusiasm for selling overcame any hesitation
about his previous work experience.
Does Sam
have to give up his passion for cars? Absolutely not! He loves participating
in car auctions and quite often helps friends and co-workers
buy the perfect used car. He’s an “expert” in
identifying hidden problems that most amateur car buyers
won’t spot and he believes that most of us don’t
know enough about how to buy a used car. (We can attest to
Sam’s expertise because he’s helped us!)
We think
he has some wonderfully funny stories for a book on used
car buying and we’re
encouraging him to write it. Stay tuned!
